Inorganic Tin based Catalysts
Discover the superior performance of inorganic tin catalysts (stannous catalysts) for your esterification reactions and polyurethane production. Our inorganic tin catalysts not only offer highest efficiency and reaction speed, but also a significantly improved toxicological profile compared to organic tin catalysts (stannic catalysts). Benefit from a solution that maximizes the performance of your processes while ensuring health safety of your products.
Inorganic tin catalysts –
Our products
Our catalysts are available in various types and specifications to suit the specific requirements of our customers. These include products such as stannous octoate, stannous oxalate, stannous chloride (anhydrous, dihydrate or in solution) and stannous oxide.
TIB Chemicals attaches great importance to continuous research and development to ensure that our products meet the latest technological standards.
Stannous octoate is used for esterification in oleo chemistry, for the catalysis of polyurethane systems, for the curing of silicone resins and silanes and for the polymerization of lactones into biodegradable polymers. TIB KAT 129 is a liquid catalyst that mixes well with the reactants and also allows easy dosing during the ongoing reaction. TIB KAT 129 can be added to the reactants either pure or in a mixture with alcohols. For esterification it can be used at a temperature > 160 °C. With TIB KAT 129 it is possible to obtain bright & clear products. Usual concentrations range between 0.01 – 0.20%. The removal of TIB KAT 129 from esters can be done by either chemical methods such as hydrolysis or oxidation, but also through adsorption with TIB TINEX Stannous octoate can be used as a catalyst in polyurethane or silicone systems based; here the addition leads to fast curing times. It also serves as a co-catalyst together with amine catalysts to regulate the CO2 reaction. Due to their high activity, stannous octoate catalysts are often used in adhesives and sealants as well as in paints and coatings.
Further possible applications can be found in the production of slab stock foam (polyurethane block foam) and in esterification reactions. Furthermore, stannous octoate catalyzes silanol condensation reactions. These play an important role in the production of RTV silicones as sealants.
Stannous oxalate is used as a catalyst in the production of organic esters, plasticizers and certain polyester resins. The usual amount used for esterification processes is between 0.01-0.2% by weight. Stannous oxalate has a high catalytic activity, which leads to almost complete conversions with short reaction times at higher reaction temperatures, > 160°C. TIB KAT 160 enables the production of light-colored esters. Secondary reactions occur little compared to acidic catalysts. Stannous oxalate is not corrosive; the amounts of TIB KAT 160 used in esterification processes are between 0.01 and 0.2 percent by weight. After the reaction is complete, TIB KAT 160 can be easily removed by chemical treatment or adsorption with TINEX® products.
TK 162 (stannous chloride, anhydrous) is used as a catalyst in the production of oleochemical-based polyesters and esters, but also as an activator in the production of elastomers. It can also be used to produce resins or polymer coating systems that are used in food packaging in quantities of 0.01 - 0.20 percent by weight. TK 162 is soluble in water and many polar media. During esterification, TK 162 minimizes drying out of alcohols and avoids odors and discoloration of the products that can arise from possible by-products. The catalyst is hygroscopic and can be removed from the ester by hydrolysis.
There are numerous applications for stannous chloride, such as a catalyst in the production of elastic polymers or for esterification reactions. Outside of catalysis, stannous chloride is used in electroplating and glass coating.
Stannous oxide is used as reducing agent, soft abrasive and to produce tin salts.
