TIB Chemicals opens its new open-space photovoltaic system

Mannheim’s Largest Photovoltaic System: TIB Chemicals Commissions New Ground-Mounted PV System

TIB Chemicals is steadfastly continuing its path toward greater sustainability and energy efficiency: The new ground-mounted photovoltaic system on the site of the former plant landfill has been successfully in operation since April 10, 2025. With this significant project, the company is not only strengthening its own energy supply but is also making an important contribution to climate protection and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The new solar plant is already the second major investment by TIB Chemicals in sustainable energy generation. Back in 2022, the modern Y2 steam turbine for generating electricity from excess steam from the sulfuric acid plant was successfully commissioned. Together, both plants form an important part of the company’s long-term sustainability and climate strategy.

The investment in renewable energy serves several purposes. On the one hand, TIB Chemicals is increasing its independence from external energy suppliers and from fluctuations in international electricity markets. On the other hand, the company is significantly expanding its self-supply of sustainably generated electricity. This allows production processes to be designed in a more resource-efficient manner and reduces the company-wide carbon footprint in the long term.

State-of-the-art photovoltaic technology across 36,000 square meters

The new ground-mounted system was constructed on a total area of approximately 36,000 square meters. For this, about 400 module racks were installed, on which a total of 8,052 photovoltaic modules are mounted. The system achieves an impressive PV generating capacity of approximately 4,469 kWp.

With this capacity, the system generates an average of approximately 4,585 megawatt-hours of green electricity annually. The majority of the energy generated is used directly at the Mannheim site and feeds into the company’s production and operational processes. This not only reduces energy costs but also cuts CO₂ emissions by a significant amount.

A Key Component of the Sustainability Strategy

The commissioning of the photovoltaic system represents another milestone in TIB Chemicals’ sustainability strategy. The company continuously invests in modern technologies to combine environmental responsibility with economic performance. Measures focused on energy efficiency, climate protection, and the use of renewable energy are central components of the company’s development.

Numerous projects have already been implemented in recent years, including the calculation of the company-wide CO₂ footprint, the introduction of sustainable processes, and investments in energy-efficient equipment and production methods.

Recognition for a Flagship Project in Mannheim

The project received special recognition during a visit by representatives from the City of Mannheim’s Economic Development Agency and the Local Green Deal Mannheim. The new ground-mounted system was honored as the largest photovoltaic system currently in Mannheim. The award underscores the project’s significance for the regional energy transition and the expansion of renewable energy in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.

With the new PV plant, TIB Chemicals is sending a clear signal for a sustainable future. The combination of innovative technology, responsible use of resources, and long-term climate protection not only strengthens Mannheim as a business location but also enhances the company’s competitiveness.
