TIB KAT 233 – Dibutyltin diacetate (DBTA) for PU, silicone, polyester, and transesterification systems

TIB KAT 233 is a butyl-based organic Sn(IV) catalyst with carboxylate functionality. Due to its very high tin content (33%) and small ligands, it is one of the most reactive liquid butyl tin catalysts in the organotin family. The corresponding octyl-based analogue is TIB KAT 229 (dioctyltin diacetate).

Main applications

TIB KAT 233 is used as a catalyst for:

  • Polyurethane synthesis
  • Transesterification (acrylates, oleochemicals, various esters)
  • Polycondensation of RTV silicone resins and silanes
  • Production of starting materials for polycarbonates

Reactivity characteristics

Thanks to its high Sn content, good raw material compatibility, and liquid form, TIB KAT 233 exhibits extremely high reactivity in numerous silicone and PU formulations.

In silicone systems, TIB KAT 233 catalyzes:

  • Silanol/silane condensation,
  • acts as both a polymerization and crosslinking catalyst.

In polyurethane systems, it is ideal for snap-cure coatings because it:

  • preferentially catalyzes the urethane reaction
  • has less effect on the water reaction
  • → thus acting as a gelation and polymerization catalyst.

TIB KAT 233 is also available in special formulations such as TIB KAT 401-05G or other variants on request.
