TIB KAT 220
Product information
TIB KAT 220 – Monobutyltin Tris-(2-Ethylhexanoate) for Esterification & Polyester Chemistry
TIB KAT 220 is a liquid organic tin(IV) catalyst that is primarily used as an esterification catalyst. It is also used less frequently as a polyurethane catalyst.
As a monobutyltin derivative, TIB KAT 220 has a lower toxicity than classic dibutyltin catalysts.
Main applications
- Synthesis of alkyd resins
- Production of plasticizers
- Production of saturated and unsaturated polyesters
- Curing of PU systems
Reactivity and performance characteristics
TIB KAT 220 offers the typical advantages of organic tin catalysts for esterification:
- High temperature stability
- Low intrinsic color
- Good reactivity and low acid numbers
- Hardly any color change due to the reaction itself
Compared to titanium catalysts, TIB KAT 220 exhibits better hydrolytic stability, which is particularly important in the early stages of the reaction.
Since the tin concentration correlates directly with reactivity, TIB KAT 220 typically requires higher usage levels than high-tin alternatives such as TIB KAT 248 or TIB KAT 160. However, this effect can be offset by better compatibility in liquid formulations or ligand-related efficiency.
