TIB KAT 218 – Dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTL) for polyurethanes, silicones, and ester reactions

TIB KAT 218 (dibutyltin dilaurate, DBTL/DBTDL) is one of the most widely used specialty metal catalysts for polyurethane systems and silicone condensation. Due to its long industrial use, DBTL is considered a benchmark catalyst, especially in the development of new formulations.

Areas of application (homogeneous catalyst)

  • Polyurethanes: Can & coil coatings, car refinish, architectural coatings, 1K/2K adhesives and sealants, elastomers
  • Silicones & silane crosslinking: especially for 1K and 2K RTV silicones
  • Esterification & transesterification: at 80–240 °C, dosage 0.01–1 wt%
  • Crosslinking of silane-modified polyolefins (XPE)
  • Special lubricant formulations

Reactivity profile

TIB KAT 218 offers balanced reactivity (front end to back end). In PU systems, the low tin content in combination with the large ligand enables:

  • Stable pot life
  • Uniform final cure
  • – e.g., in 2K PU coatings.

Since TIB KAT 218 is a carboxylate catalyst with bio-based ligands, color development may occur when exposed to heat.
