Product information

TIB KAT 214 – Dioctyl bis(isooctyl mercaptoacetate) for PU adhesives, elastomers, and foams

TIB KAT 214, also known as dioctyltin‑S,S′‑bis(isooctylmercaptoacetate) is an octyl-based dialkylated Sn(IV) organotin catalyst system with thiol-functionalized ligands.

This ligand gives the catalyst:

  • a controlled, delayed initial reactivity (upfront delay)
  • improved hydrolytic stability
  • organotin-typical high activity in PU systems

Compared to carboxylate catalysts such as TIB KAT 218, TIB KAT 216, or TIB KAT 300, TIB KAT 214 offers more precise control of reactivity.

Main applications

TIB KAT 214 is preferably used in PU systems that require temperature-activated, controlled reactivity:

  • PU adhesives
  • Elastomers
  • PU foams
  • Coatings (bake-cure systems) – less suitable for RT curing

Reactivity profile

  • Selective catalysis of the isocyanate-polyol reaction
  • Less influence on the isocyanate-water reaction
  • Limited use in water-based systems

Inactivity in silicone & ester reactions

Due to the sulfur-containing ligand:

  • TIB KAT 214 is practically inactive in silicone and esterification reactions
  • Thermal deblocking is required to start the back-end reaction

Difference to other mercaptide systems

As an octyl-based mercaptoacetate, TIB KAT 214 exhibits a stronger, longer-lasting delay than mercaptan-based alternatives such as:

  • TIB KAT 319
  • TIB KAT 213
  • CAS-Nr.
