TIB KAT 162 – Anhydrous Stannous Chloride for esterification, reduction, and polymer chemistry

TIB KAT 162, also known as anhydrous stannous chloride or tin dichloride, is a high-metal-content, inorganic Sn(II) catalyst used as a reducing agent and esterification catalyst in numerous chemical reactions.

The product is manufactured from high-purity tin to maximize the Sn(II) content and minimize Sn(IV) content.

TIB KAT 162 is used as:

  • Catalyst in the production of polyesters and oleochemical esters
  • Activator in the production of elastomers
  • Catalyst for resins and polymer coatings, including applications in food packaging

The recommended dosage is 0.01–0.20 wt%.

TIB KAT 162 is water-soluble and highly soluble in many polar, non-aqueous solvents. In esterifications, it reduces side reactions such as alcohol dehydration and prevents odors and discoloration that can be caused by by-products.

Due to its hygroscopic nature, TIB KAT 162 quickly adsorbs moisture, which is why dry handling is essential. After the reaction, the catalyst can be removed by chemical processes (hydrolysis) or by adsorption with TIB TINEX® products.
