Proven Corrosion Protection for Hydrogen-Intensive Applications
TIB Chemicals AG and the PROTEGOL Coatings Team are pleased to announce a major milestone in the field of modern coating technologies: Several of our coating systems have successfully demonstrated their suitability for use in hydrogen-intensive environments. The tests conducted show that selected PROTEGOL Coatings reliably maintain their protective function and mechanical properties even under hydrogen exposure. This makes our solutions ideally suited for the current and future requirements of the hydrogen economy.
Hydrogen as a Key Technology in the Energy Transition
Hydrogen plays a central role in the transition to a climate-friendly and sustainable energy supply. Whether in industry, the energy sector, or in infrastructure projects for the transport and storage of hydrogen, the demands placed on materials and corrosion protection systems are constantly increasing. Of particular importance is the question of how hydrogen affects metallic materials and their coatings over the long term.
To offer our customers reliable solutions for these demanding applications, we have conducted extensive investigations into the hydrogen resistance of selected PROTEGOL Coatings.
Extensive testing under realistic conditions
As part of the investigations, the influence of hydrogen on our coating systems as well as on the protected metal surfaces was analyzed. The test conditions were selected to closely mimic the requirements of hydrogen-related applications. The tested coatings were exposed to a hydrogen atmosphere at a pressure of 5 bar over a period of twelve weeks. The aim of the investigations was to evaluate potential effects on the mechanical integrity of the coating as well as on its adhesion to the metallic substrate.
Impact tests were conducted to assess mechanical resilience. These tests provide important insights into whether the coating retains its resistance to external influences even after prolonged exposure to hydrogen. In addition, the physicochemical interaction between the coating and the metal surface was investigated using adhesion tests. Especially in demanding industrial applications, a permanently stable bond between the coating system and the substrate is crucial for long-term corrosion protection.
Convincing Results for Hydrogen-Related Applications
The results of the investigations are extremely positive. Throughout the entire twelve-week test period, no negative effects due to the influence of hydrogen were detected in either the impact tests or the adhesion tests. The tested PROTEGOL Coatings demonstrated unchanged mechanical performance and stable adhesion to the metal surfaces. These results confirm the high performance of the systems even under demanding conditions and underscore their suitability for applications in the hydrogen infrastructure sector.
For operators, designers, and plant manufacturers, this means added confidence when selecting suitable coating solutions for hydrogen-carrying equipment, containers, piping systems, and other industrial components.
Reliable Corrosion Protection for the Hydrogen Economy
As the importance of green hydrogen grows, so does the demand for durable, resilient, and future-proof coating systems. PROTEGOL Coatings make an important contribution in this regard. Their proven resistance to hydrogen supports the long-term integrity of systems and helps minimize corrosion, material damage, and maintenance costs.
