About Stannous Chloride-Based Water Treatment Additives
In water treatment, stannous chloride acts both as a reducing and corrosion protection agent. Reducing agents, such as stannous chloride solutions, play a vital role in water treatment and the broader environmental management industry.
Their primary function is to alter the oxidation state of various substances, particularly residual heavy metals. Through this process, reducing agents can effectively “reduce” or neutralize harmful metal contaminants, transforming them into less toxic, more manageable forms. In addition, stannous chloride helps in minimizing corrosion whereby the tin metal is plated out onto the water treatment equipment.
Stannous chloride solutions, in particular, are widely used due to their stability, efficiency, and versatility. By chemically reducing metal ions, they aid in the effective removal of these pollutants, contributing to safer discharge and recycle/reuse processes.

Stannous Chloride Water Treatment Additives: Solid Grades
TIB KAT 154 (Stannous Chloride Dihydrate) is our high metal content inorganic stannous tin solid grade that meets American Chemical Society (A.C.S.) specifications. TIB KAT 154 serves as the base product for all our solution-grade water treatment metal-based additive products. TIB KAT 154 and its anhydrous form, TIB KAT 162 (Stannous Chloride Anhydrous) are FDA-approved for both indirect and direct food contact uses. For example, stannous chloride dihydrate is used in various dental cleaning supply products.
Stannous Chloride Water Treatment Additive Solutions
We offer four standard grades of stannous chloride solutions that act as water treatment additives, mainly differing in active tin (stannous) content. These products include:
- TIB STAN S25 (Stannous Chloride Solution) which contains 25% stannous chloride dihydrate and 14% stannous tin
- TIB STAN S45 (Stannous Chloride Solution) which contains 45% stannous chloride dihydrate and 24% stannous tin. This product uses a high-purity grade of HCl as enhanced stabilizer.
- TIB STAN S50 (Stannous Chloride Solution) which contains 50% stannous chloride dihydrate and 27% stannous tin.
- TIB STAN (Stannous Chloride Solution) which contains 72% stannous chloride dihydrate and 39% stannous tin. This product uses a high-purity grade of HCl as an enhanced stabilizer.
